The Raven is often confused with the crow. With all due respect, to the untrained eye, they can be hard to tell apart. Both birds are black, have a similar appearance, and belong to the corvidae family. The raven however, is twice the size and has a distinct pointy, triangular shaped tail. The raven is able to soar, but the crow flaps its wings during flight. Ravens prefer the company of another bird, while crows hang out in larger flocks. A group of crows is referred to as murder of crows whilst a group of ravens is referred to as an unkindness of ravens. Why the negative connoting? Their maybe more than one answer. Ravens are associated with death because they are carrion-eating birds. They are also associated with the Norse god Odin, due to his pet ravens, Huginn and Muginn. According to Norse mythology, Odin is the god of many things, including the god of the dead. If you sift through the macabre, you’ll find that ravens are highly intelligent birds that can solve complex problems, use tools, and even mimic human speech.
