The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is another name the Bible gives to Jesus. Born of the tribe of Judah, Christians view Revelation 5:5 as the second coming of Christ. We first hear of the lion of Judah in Genesis 49:9-10 when the Biblical patriarch, Jacob, blesses his sons and calls his 4th born son, a lion cub and proceeds to prophesy that the scepter will never leave Judah’s blood line. The notice that hung on the cross with Jesus referred to him as the “king of the Jews.” In Luke 1:33 the angel Gabriel tells Mary that in her womb is a king who will reign over a kingdom with no end and that he will be born out of the tribe of Judah. Both Joseph and Mary were descendants from the tribe of Judah. Rastafarians and Jews attribute cultural significance to this phrase as well, although the interpretation is varied.
