Lepidoptera are the second largest order of insects and represents all moths and butterflies. Within this order, there are 180,000 species. Lepidoptera are one of the easiest order of insects to identify in the world because everyone knows when they’re looking at a moth or a butterfly. Lepidoptera can be found on 6 out of 7 continents in the world. I am sure you can guess which continent they are missing from. Moths and butterflies are similar in the sense they both go through the same stages of metamorphosis. However, moths form a silk cocoon instead of a chrysalis. Some moths pupate underground while butterflies pupate above the ground. Moths are nocturnal, while butterflies are diurnal. Another observable difference is that moths have feathery antennae and hairy bodies while butterflies typically don’t. This lepidopteran looks like it could be a moth due to its hairy body, but the antennae is the dead give-a-way—the long shaft with a bulb at the end. This particular lepidopteran is called a tortoiseshell butterfly and it’s found in Eurasia.
