The town crest of Leonberg Germany is of a giant Leonberger rearing up on it's hindquarters. Not many people are familiar with the story of the Leonberger, the dog breed that was intended to put a German town on a map in 1846. In the 19th century, a German politician and exotic animal trader by the name of Heinrich Essig bred a Landseer with a Saint Bernard and a Great Pyrenees. Over time, Essig came up with this gorgeous breed that looked like an imposing lion. The Leonberger, or Leo, became a beloved dog among European titled classes. Bismarck and Napoleon II were known to have Leonbergers. Leos are amazing guardian dogs that are known as being gentle giants until they feel those they are protecting are in danger. These exotic dogs have double coats and can overheat easily. When they are in the mood to cuddle, they are the best dogs to snuggle up with.
