The butterfly effect was originally posed as a question Edward Lorenz, an atmospheric physicist, asked in one of his research papers in the late 60s or early 70s. He asked the question “Does the flap of a butterflies wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?” Edward Lorenz was trying to figure out if he could use mathematical equations to predict the weather. During a two month simulation test he learned that the slightest change in a decimal could, over time, create drastically different weather outcomes. Hollywood has since used this phrase to come up a different interpretation of the butterfly effect. The popular interpretation today is simply that seemingly insignificant choices a person makes, can actually have lasting consequences for their lives. For example, a person could make a decision to go to their usual dog park down the street, verses getting in their car and traveling 20 minutes to a less familiar dog park. That split second decision might have been the reason Sarah met Trevor.
