You don’t have to know about dog breeds to know that German Shepherds are one of the preferred breeds for law enforcement and military personnel. Since the breed came out of West Germany in 1899, with the help of Captain Max von Stephanitz, GSDs have been bred to be one of the most versatile of all the working dogs. They can be trained to be search and rescue dogs, drug sniffing/bomb sniffing dogs. K-9 Companion dogs, therapy dogs, actors, guard dogs, and of course…herding dogs. GSDs have a reputation as being highly intelligent dogs that need daily mental and physical stimulation. German shepherds have more than a few defining attributes that make them desirable pets such as, their loyalty, courage, intelligence, trainability, and their desire to please their guardians. The internet is full of heroic stories about GSDs. One viral video is of Buddy, the Alaskan German shepherd who led a state trooper to his owners burning workshop in 2010.
