African Grey Parrots have mastered the art of mimicking. Their mouths are shaped nothing like ours, yet they mimic our speech. It is fascinating to watch talking parrots communicate because they pick up small nuances of speech such as inflection and tone. They do this because they have two voice boxes. Their vocal organ, called the syrinx is a double-barreled organ that allows them to compress muscles that control the way sound comes out of their “voice box.” Additionally, like humans, parrots use their tongues to manipulate the sounds they want to produce. Parrots also have the brain capacity to be able to pull off their mimicry abilities, making them some of the most intelligent birds in the world.
